How to Crop a Video Online

Cropping removes pixels from the outer edges of every frame. The selected rectangle becomes the complete visible picture in the exported video, so anything outside it is discarded.

  1. Upload your video. Choose an MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM, MKV, or another supported file.
  2. Choose an aspect ratio. Use Custom or select 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, or 3:4.
  3. Position the crop frame. Drag it over the subject or content you want to keep.
  4. Adjust its size. Drag a handle or enter the required output width and height.
  5. Preview the complete video. Make sure moving subjects remain inside the selected area.
  6. Crop and download. Process the video, then save it or continue editing.

Choose an Aspect Ratio or Custom Crop

An aspect-ratio preset locks the shape of the crop frame while you resize it. Use 16:9 for a horizontal frame, 9:16 or 3:4 for vertical compositions, and 1:1 for a square crop. Choose Custom when you need a specific shape or exact pixel dimensions.

A preset controls the shape, not the publishing requirements of a particular platform. Interface overlays and recommended dimensions can change, so preview the finished video in its destination before publishing.

When to Crop a Video

Common crop tasks

  • Remove a distraction near an edge.
  • Reframe a subject that is off-center.
  • Select a vertical area from horizontal footage.
  • Create a square or portrait composition.
  • Remove embedded borders manually.
  • Focus attention on one part of the picture.

Check the complete timeline

The crop position stays fixed throughout the standalone tool’s output. Play the complete clip before exporting: a person or object that moves may leave a tight crop even if the first frame looks correct.

What Happens to Resolution and Quality?

Cropping reduces the pixel dimensions because part of the original picture is removed. A 1920×1080 source cropped to its central half does not retain all 1920×1080 source pixels. If that smaller result is later enlarged to fill a large screen, it may look softer.

Use the largest source available, keep the crop no tighter than necessary, and avoid repeated export cycles. Preview faces, text, and fine details at the size viewers are likely to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I crop video online for free?

Yes. You can crop video directly in your browser without installing any software.

Will cropping reduce video quality?

Cropping removes source pixels and reduces the frame dimensions. The result may look softer if a tight crop is enlarged later, and the processed file may also be encoded during export.

What video formats can be cropped?

The tool supports popular formats including MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM and MKV.

Can I crop videos for social media?

Yes. You can select square, horizontal, or vertical framing. Check the current requirements and interface safe areas of the destination platform before publishing.

Can I remove black borders by cropping?

Yes. Use a manual crop when you want precise control. If the borders are uniform black areas embedded in the file, the Remove Black Bars tool can detect and crop them automatically.

Does cropping shorten the video?

No. Cropping changes the visible picture area, not the timeline duration. Use Trim Video when you need to remove time from the beginning or end.

Can the crop frame follow a moving subject?

The standalone tool uses one fixed crop area for the complete video. Use the full editor and animated position or keyframes when the framing needs to move over time.
